FieldRoutes / PestRoutes -

  • Overview: FieldRoutes started out as PestRoutes, which was focused on B2C mapping for pest control. The ServiceTitan acquisition of FieldRoutes brought the capabilities of the field service software together with the capabilities of B2C Sales Mapping Software, and has positioned FieldRoutes as a strong B2C mapping solution. If you are managing a team of sales reps that sell to houses door to door, FieldRoutes should be on the shortlist of providers you evaluate.

ServiceTitan, the software leader for businesses who service homes, who filed for IPO at $18 billion in early 2022 brought a ton of functionality and capability to the B2C space, where all the other products are made by small companies with fewer resources. With FieldRoutes, track your assets in the field, build routes, write up estimates, put together digital work orders, text with customers, appointment reminders, payment processing, signatures, submit financing applications, rich data on households for insights and upselling, call center tools to support the field, full suite of marketing software focused on selling to the home, custom pricing development in the field, automated notifications and billing, dispatching, job status tracking, profit optimization, scheduling, payroll, bonuses, commissions, overtime calculation, timesheet tracking, approval tracking, accounting integrations, invoicing, receipts, refunds, reporting, job costing, inventory management. All available in a modular fashion so you just get what you need for your team in the field.

Now that FieldRoutes has been combined with ServiceTitan, our prediction is that there will be some shakeup in this category as the other companies merge or get pushed out in the wake of these developments.

  • Potential Issues: The ratings for the old Pest Route App on Android were not good. We’re guessing Android was not a focus area for them as they were historically focused on USA based customers. But with the updates from ServiceTitan, we expect that they will be more globally focused and upgrade their Android Apps. But if you are an international team or planning on using the Android App, we’d definitely recommend giving that a thorough evaluation.

SalesRabbit -

  • Overview: Since 2013, SalesRabbit has been focused on helping B2C, Door to Door sales teams improve their processes of selling to homes. Their CEO had a background in D2D pest control sales, and believed that applying technology to get better technology into the hands of D2D sellers would help reduce the clumsiness of the sales processes that were in place.

SalesRabbit has mapping to help figure out which areas of the neighborhood to focus your team's efforts on, rich demographic data about the people that live in the houses that the sales reps will be knocking doors on (called DataGrid AI), lead management tools to track your funnel, painless e-contracts, signature capabilities, GooglePlaces Data to generate leads and routes to the businesses in the neighborhood. Also, their New Mover product provides leads that show who is new to the neighborhood (some of the best leads around as new home occupiers are great leads). In addition, geographic mobile advertising so that you can advertise to the mobile phones in a neighborhood before you knock the doors, weather and storm data to overlay on a neighborhood to show who may have roof damage, home damage, or need remediation, presentation and proposal software to help your reps show visual aids, and team management capabilities to help your managers track what’s going on with the feet on the street.

SalesRabbit, Spotio, and ServiceTitan are the leaders in the D2D/B2C space, and which one is the right fit for a company depends on the rest of your tech stack. All are well-reviewed, and we’d recommend a trial of each to decide which is the best fit and will work best with your organization. There are examples of both small and large customers being on the record for being happy with both.

  • Potential Issues: While we noted some complaints about the mobile app on the iphone being difficult to use and buggy, the reviews on the Apple App Store are generally good and there are a lot of reviews. As the users of these apps are walking around in sometimes rural areas, we saw a pattern with the negative reviews where we suspect there were connectivity issues that caused a lot of the bad reviews. You need internet connectivity for most apps of this nature to perform all their functions. That being said, the app is generally well-reviewed and you can see a wide range of reviews here

Bottom line, like every other product in this analysis, definitely field test this app with your team in the field before you commit to anything. But if you have a door-to-door team selling to people in their houses on foot, SalesRabbit should certainly be on your short list.

  • Potential Issues: There have been challenges reported with getting support in a timely manner. Challenges with the routing features also reported. From the complaints about the quality of the maps and the routes, they likely aren’t using the premium providers of Mapping and Routing APIs in the app. Some general usability issues.

This app has more sophisticated routing capabilities than other apps that enable B2C and door to door selling (other than FieldRoutes which is also strong there). There is some overlap with some capabilities found in the Trucking and Fleet Management App Category. They have less data and marketing capabilities than some of the competitors. Like others in this category, to compete with FieldRoutes by ServiceTitan on the full customer lifecycle, they have a lot of features to catch up on.

Spotio -

  • Overview: Spotio helps field sales teams raise their performance in the field with their mapping software that can auto-log information gathered from the team, track activities across channels with templates for emails, calls, and texts, give sales managers visibility into field activity in Real-Time, and integrate with CRMs, ERPs and other tools. Also, users can provide live trainings to your team in the field, map sales territories to eliminate territory overlap, optimize routes, create recurring routes, save documents and photos, see where your sales team went with breadcrumb tracking. In addition, users can get leads, insights, and contact info of the residents or owners of the doors you are knocking, know when the home was last purchased, know the age and credit capacity of the residents, know if the residents are Eco-friendly or not. (Companies selling solar to homes is a key industry for them, and they are the only company to advertise this feature). Also, assign leads to your reps by territory, display and analyze data like how prospects are moving through sales stages.

  • Potential Issues: There are a lot of bad reviews of this product, and complaints about customer support. Syncing issues have been reported across different platforms such as CRMs. Also, there are complaints about data saved into the mobile app disappearing. From some of the feedback, it seems like this app is not as customizable as some of its competitors in this category.

A source of a lot of the negative reviews may be that while they historically supported door-to-door / B2C users, they are now advertising that their app also works for B2B. Because the app was built for B2C, many of the negative reviews are likely from the B2B users who need vastly different workflows. But for the B2C users that the app was built for, they are likely receiving higher reviews.

There are a lot of people who liked them in the past, but they have received worse reviews over time. A lot of their positive reviews are old, and their negative reviews are new. This is not what we usually see, normally apps and reviews improve over time. This could also be a result of their advertising that their product is useful for B2B users, who, in turn, give them bad reviews, not because the product is bad, but because it wasn’t built for them, so it's not a good fit.

Overall, this is a well-reviewed product and a leader in the B2C space. We recommend, as always, that you do a trial with the systems, such as CRMs fully integrated and using the mobile devices your team uses in the field, before making a purchase.

  • Reference Customers:  None Listed

  • Potential Issues: There have been complaints around having a difficult time getting started in the app(getting set up with the right company was a challenge), but fewer complaints once people are already set up in the app. We didn’t see anything that would trip a lot of people up in the on-boarding, so maybe this has been fixed. If you are deploying a team, keep an eye on the initial sign up and that everyone has the right code to make sure your reps can do that initial login.

Requests for more customization and flexibility within the app. There have been more complaints about the Android App and a few people who had used both liked the Apple App better.
